Think gaming screen boundaries have been pushed as far as they can? Think again: Samsung offers a 49” curved HDR monitor with a massive 5120x1440 resolution, an updated version of the previous 3440x1080 display that the company announced in 2017. It’s a stunner, let’s take a look at Samsung’s flagship gaming display.

A serious spec sheet

We’ve already mentioned the mega pixel count on this screen, it’s effectively 2 x QHD because QHD would be 2560x1440. So this double wide display is exactly what you would see if you align two screens next to each other.

It’s not just about pixel count, the screen will probably offer VESA DisplayHDR 1000 which means the screen can support a massive 1000 nits of brightness. You can also expect FreeSync 2 HDR support, an AMD standard which means direct tone mapping and a reduction in display latency too. Overall FreeSync brings smoother frame rates, which is great in the context of the screen’s 120Hz refresh rate.

Response times should be excellent too at around 4ms thanks to the screen’s quantum dot LED technology, while you can also expect support for the full DCI-P3 gamut. Overall the colours on this screen should really stand out. For connectivity you can look forward to an HDMI port and two DisplayPorts.

Should buy this screen?

Well, as you would have guessed this screen does not come cheap. With a 32:9 form factor you also need to consider practical implications – and whether your favourite titles will fully support this extra-wide format.

That said, it’s a stunning screen that will enhance your gameplay particularly where your preferred titles support the aspect ratio. With the huge amounts some gamers spend on their GPUs and other hardware it’s not inconceivable that getting this screen can make a lot of sense.

Screen tech also moves more slowly than GPU tech, so your big investment in the 49” CHG90 monitor could well pay off for many years. Besides, why get top performing hardware when you can’t enjoy the maximum immersive experience at the same time?
