Experienced gamers will know the HyperX Cloud range of headsets. Kingston has produced some of the most popular, long-standing headset products that have stayed at the top of the list of headset choices year in, year out. But why are the HyperX Cloud headsets so popular? And how does the Cloud Alpha stack up?

Checking out the HyperX Cloud Alpha

The HyperX Cloud Alpha is a solidly built headset with large, thick over-the-ear foam pads alongside the expected microphone. It is a wired headset and comes with bright red accents highlighting its serious gaming intent. The frame is aluminum for light weight and is finished in a matt effect which looks pretty good.

Every part of the headset can be replaced so if the foam pads wear out fear not – you can simply replace them. You’ll find in the box both a shorter cable with a 4 pole headset jack plus a longer extension cable with dual jacks which you can use to connect to your PC’s front panel. Chords come with in-line control for volume and muting the microphone.

Memory foam for comfort

Gamers spend hours and hours in front of their PCs so it’s easy to see why comfort becomes a priority. The last thing you want to do is to break up the action because of a headset that’s become simply too painful to wear.

This is where the HyperX Cloud range has always stood out. These headsets come with a type of memory foam that is superbly comfortable. There is not much change between the Cloud 1, Cloud 2 and Cloud Alpha here and we’re glad it has stayed the same. This goes for the overall structure of the headphone too – it was designed for comfort, it works, and Kingston is not messing with the formula.

It’s also about the sound

Gamers are not hi-fi geeks but do expect solid sound performance from a high-end headset. Here the Cloud Alpha delivers the goods. You don’t get the perfectly balanced sound of a hi-fi headset from companies such as AKG or Bowers&Wilkins, because gamers like hearing the action – and that means lots of bass. Nonetheless, the Cloud Alpha delivers all the treble tones too so you won’t miss out on more subtle details. It’s a great audio setup for gaming.

Should you buy the HyperX Cloud Alpha?

Unless you’re on a very strict budget or require a wireless headset we can wholeheartedly recommend the Cloud Alpha. It’s a component that will outlast many other components in your system and which will cost you the fraction of the price of a good GPU. At the same time, you’ll improve your overall gaming experience by getting closer to the audio action.
