Yes, here at Gear-up.me we really push our gaming cred but we’re not just about gaming. You’ll find a range of computers and accessories at Gear-up.me, including kit that will keep your office humming. One of our latest additions is this top-notch RAID5-capable NAS from Qnap. Let’s take a look.

Plenty of space

This three-bay device is great for office we need a reasonable amount of storage in there NAS. The desktop-based Qnap TS-328 is easy to configure with three 8GB drives, for example, giving you a total of 24GB of storage, unless you activate RAID which would eat away at that.

It is very flexible in other respects too, including two Ethernet ports, for example – great for ensuring consistent and solid network throughput. There are also a couple of USB ports so you can add additional external storage if you need it.

Software and features

Qnap supplies its own operating system with the device. It’s equipped with 2GB of RAM and a 1.4GHz Realtek RTD1296 64-bit CPU which gives it enough processing power to ensure smooth use of the onboard operating system.

For businesses, one of the stand-out features is the built-in RAID support. With three bays you can take advantage of RAID 5 to protect your data. You will lose some of your storage pool in the process but in return, should a drive fail, you’ll find yourself protected.

Included with the device is a Storage & Snapshots app which makes it easy to manage storage itself as well as your backups. Storing snapshots can help you get back data that is accidentally overwritten, for example.

There are plenty of multimedia features too which is great for home while also being useful for offices that deal with media. It includes a Videos, Photo and Music station for easy management of your media plus a Realtek chip that supports 4K H.264 and  H.265 hardware decoding for smooth video playback.

Performance

The powerful processor in this unit combined with the dual Ethernet ports means this unit can really push data along very quickly. With both Ethernet ports in use, you can expect downstream rates of 220MB/s plus while storing data on the unit could easily hit 80MB/s to 90MB/s, great for storing large files.

Should I buy it?

Qnap has made a solid and affordable NAS here which is ideal if you want a combination of RAID 5 compatibility while keeping costs and physical footprint low. We think it’s a versatile choice for both home and office, but why not get in touch if you are still not sure?
