Fans of PC gaming will know MSI’s line of Nvidia cards pretty well. In general, MSI offers a good mix of value and performance. MSI also tends to release the latest Nvidia silicon as soon as possible, so it’s no surprise MSI RTX cards are already on the market.

Checking out MSI’s RTX cards

By now you probably know what you can expect from the typical RTX card. There is not a huge amount of flexibility when it comes to RTX card spec: by definition 2080 and 2080 Ti silicon is best fitted to top-end GPUs only, and that’s why the RTX range from MSI packs all the expected top-end features. Look out for:

  • PCI Express 3.0
  • 250W+ power consumption
  • 8GB of GDDR6 RAM (11GB for the Ti edition)
  • Option to engage SLI (2-way max)
  • DisplayPort, HDMI and USB C outputs

Nor will you be surprised to know that these are large cards: don’t try and squeeze an RTX card into a compact case. Allow enough room for the card to sit over two slots: both cards have three fans to help manage heat dissipation over extensive heat sinks. This is one more than the reference Nvidia cards.

There is nothing from a functional viewpoint that truly sets apart the MSI RTX cards from their competitors, but at the same time nothing is obviously lacking either. One point to note is that the Ti edition contains an extra power connector, which can help ensure enough power during demanding gaming. What really counts, of course, is the performance of the card. So how does the MSI match up to its competitors?

How do the MSI RTX cards compare?

There’s a lack of RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti cards currently on the market, but this will change rapidly. As such it’s not that easy to compare the MSI RTX cards with rivals, but we can always compare the RTX release from MSI with Nvidia’s founders’ card.

Just like there’s not much room for movement in card design and build, this high up the GPU food chain, there’s not a huge amount of room for differentiation in performance. Nonetheless, we are glad to report that the MSI RTX cards are performing close to Nvidia’s reference cards, and so will make a good buy if you are in the market for 2080 or 2080 Ti silicon.

Your MSI RTX 2080 or 2080 Ti card will solidly put you in the realm of 4K gaming at high FPS. What’s more, the MSI cards appear to have better cooling features, so you can bargain on a fair degree of overclocking headroom.
