Windows 10X was the new upcoming version of Windows that has been built up from the base of new PCs. The Windows 10X was based on the new version of Windows known as “Windows Core OS” which equips legacy components and features that support modern user experience and enhanced security.

This version of Windows was supposed to launch on PCs in 2021. Unfortunately, Microsoft has announced the postponement of the development of Windows 10X and has canceled the launch this year. And unlikely, it will ever launch as Microsoft is now working on a major update for Windows that will bring with it a new refreshed UI and features that are supposed to enhance workflow in the future. This big new UI refresh is codenamed ‘Sun Valley’ and is based on the Cobalt release. This refresh is expected to launch later this year.

Microsoft has announced that it will be organizing an event “what’s next for Windows” on 24th June, where we could expect to see the announcement of Sun Valley and the next-gen of Windows to the world.

One of the main goals of Microsoft with its Sun Valley update is to freshen up the UI which includes round off sharp elements, Making legacy interfaces more consistent with modern interfaces, and clean up parts of OS to make the user experience more simple and lean that cater more modern workflow.

We have heard that Microsoft is working on an updated taskbar that will feature a centered design for pinned/running apps. Microsoft is also planning for cleaning up the system tray to make it easily accessible with touch. Microsoft is also working to round off sharp elements like corners start menu, action center, context menu, and buttons.

In addition, Microsoft is also working on a brand new start menu. This brand new layout will feature a centered design with a grid of apps, recent documents, file explorer shortcut along with your user name/icon, and shutdown button at the bottom. There’s also an “all app” button at the top right which takes you to a separate app list page. Start, App center and jump list menu will also be visually separated. Most in-box apps like windows setting apps, alarms, and clocks will be getting a design refresh too.

With the new update, we’ll also see newer, streamlined animations that make the experience feel more fluid. Windows 10X already has fluid animations, so we would expect to see most here too.

However, this new update is expected to launch at the tail-end of the year, so we have to wait few more months to experience all these new features.
